Raw Sewage is a coastal disaster, and it increases bird activity around Wellington Airport

The continued discharge of untreated sewage is a disaster for our southern coast. It is not only causing issues to the environment and local community but it’s increasing the number of seabirds (mainly black back gulls) in and around the southern coast.

Locals in the area have noticed the bird activity at the point of the sewage discharge of both the long and short outfall. Wellington Airport has noticed an increased bird activity near the runway. You may therefore hear more noises from the airport to scare the birds off and reduce the potential of bird strike.
